Are we what we eat?
Wednesday, October 15, 2008
In addition to talking about alcohol (see below), I have also agreed to discuss food - this time at the Battle of Ideas in a couple of weeks. Title of the meeting, at the Royal College of Art in London, is "Are we what we eat?". Details HERE.

There many things that are forbidden. One is salt. Active youngsters need salt, as they sweat salt out of their body. People who eat fresh food, as opposed to processed food, also require salt to replace any loss. Cramp is caused mainly through lack of salt.
Correct Chas when I was young (oh so long ago) we were encouraged to take extra salt if we had been running around on hot summer days. Salt depletion is a very dangerous condition whereas excess is rare as the body is well able to maintain a proper balance, this is called physiology. We are not what we eat, on the contrary we turn what we eat into us this is known as metabolism. You do not accumulate toxins you have kidneys and a liver that have evolved over millions of years to prevent this. Sometimes things do not work as well as they should, this is called being ill. It is about time the health freaks were reminded that most of us for most of our lives are not ill, but very well thankyou. When we do become ill we need help that does not include being harranged and told we are the authors of our own downfall. Human beings are mostly the authors of their own downfall, this is called life. More harm is done by not having enough to eat than is done by eating too much. Starvation kills quickly, deficiencies kill quickly the so called life style diseases apparently take a lifetime to kill you. Is it only me that feels moved to say "so what".
Well said MCO and most eloquently put.
