An excellent piece of polemical prose, which contains all my favourite elements: passion, well-directed irony, irrefutable counter-argument, and humane and unassailable common sense.
It won't make a scrap of difference, of course, to the shoulder-shruggers at You-Know-Where.
So what ?
It's the reasonably-minded majority that we need to educate.
Not the un-educable minority of health cranks.
The trick now is to make OUR collective voice more persuasive than theirs.
And - as in the case of 'Climate Change' - the evidence from the Real World is steadily mounting in our favour.
All Big Lies have a limited shelf-life.................................
As a taxpaying smoker I don't see why my money shuold be wasted on an organisation that merely bullies and villifies smokers,has failed miserably in it's efforts ,mostly prejudicial and based on quack science ,some of the claims are so far fetched they are comical.
Ash'es achievments.
Cutting adult smoking rates = 0
Turning millions of decent people into pariahs =success
Closing down traditional english pubs ,success = 4000+ gone for ever.
And now their next trick attempting to close down 1000's of corner shops.
If they want to carry on like this maybe their next biggest contributor the Pharmaceutical corporation PFIZER can pay for their miserable failures ,why should the taxpayer fund a failed propaganda outlet like ASH.
If Pfizer want to keep ASH they can pay for it .
If we all stop smoking
If we all stop drinking alcohol
If we all live to be 90+
Will we all have to work till we are 80+
Or will euthanasia be availabe on the NHS "Voluntary"of course.

While we're on the subject of the Benefits and Evils of lobbying, it might be pertinent to note the irony inherent in the fact that the 'healthcare professionals' who so militantly castigate tobacco-use tend in the main to be the VERY ones who are pressing for the compulsory FLUORIDATION of our drinking water.
Now, while I'm a Natural Sceptic when it comes to ALL headline-grabbing health-scare stories, I've long been convinced that the dangers ascribed to fluoridation need seriously to be considered.
I've just been sent a rather interesting link on the subject by a friend of mine, under the rubric '150+ Fluoride facts, horror stories and cover-ups'.

Two items, in particular, resonate with the concerns most of us feel on this site about the Anti-Tobacco Hysteria - and whose interests it REALLY serves.
First:
"According to Dr Dean Burke, former chief biochemist at the National Cancer Institute, more that 50 000 Americans a year are dying of CANCER caused by fluoridated drinking water. "
I wonder how many are smokers ?
And, second:
"Water fluoridation is the ideal solution for industry's fluoride waste disposal problem. Like the tall smoke stack introduced a decade earlier, it diverts and disperses pollutants far and wide. Chemicals that would cost $7,000 per tanker to dispose of are SOLD instead to cities at $265 to at least $722 per ton. Consequently, the phosphate fertilizer manufacturers invest millions of dollars in grants and lobbying of government officials to promote water fluoridation. "
Chiefly on the basis that it'll prevent too-frequent visits to the dentist by Junior (and ruin his chances in Hollywood).
Sound familiar ?
And yet - not a twitter of protest from 'Precautionary Principle' advocates who scream SO loudly when anyone dares challenge the pseudo-science of Climate Change and SHS.

This is a communication from April 2008 between Sandra Webber, chair of the Aviation Health Working Group (AHWG) and Dr Nigel Dowdall from British Airways Health Services (BAHS), who was also sitting on the AHWG committee at the time. The remit of the AHWG is to work with all interested parties on the cabin air quality issue.
We’re all for open discussion, and given the huge amount of information the Aerotoxic Association has collected over the past three years, it’s a great shame that the Department for Transport (DfT) and the AHWG are doing their best to shut us and other groups out of the debate and the current research. Perhaps they should be applauding us for the newspaper articles and parliamentary questions and for helping to bring this serious issue out into the open.
After all, we all want the same thing – clean and safe cabin air for crew and passengers. Wouldn't it be good if we could all work together on this?

The latest irish health report says that the amount of people who smoke has increased and may be at pre ban levels.
The oldest man in ireland was asked to what he attributed his 106 years and he said he never married, didnt drink, just the odd cigarette.

I'd have thought the Pharmaceutical industry would have carried out background checks on all it's 'Business Managers', normally expecting to run some degree of success. A string of failed business and almost running a Glasgow institiution into the ground hardly constitutes success.
