Smoking and oral sex

Here is a new anti-smoking ad that will appear in newspapers and bars in France this week. Full story HERE.

I couldn't possibly comment.

Update: "As far as I know, practising fellatio doesn't cause cancer," said a spokeswoman for the Movement for Women's Liberation. I think this misses the point of the advertisement which, as I see it, implies that under-age smoking is on a par with a teenager being forced to have (oral) sex with a middle-aged man (ie child abuse or sexual assault if not rape).

Or am I reading too much into this?

Reader Comments (27)

Oh dear! Yet ANOTHER brave-hard-hitting-in-yer-face-image, designed to Get The Message Across (certain people don't like smoking) ?

Or a disgusting piece of Visual Fascism ?

Think I'll go with the latter.

God forgive me, but I'm really starting to LOATHE these people.

And THEY are the ones who gave us the remarkably 'modern' concept of the Hate Crime.

Remember ?

It is a good example of "pornograhy for Prigs".
I bet the maggots at ASH were creaming their pants over it though.

February 24, 2010 at 9:37 | Unregistered CommenterSpecky

This advert, like the other attempts to 'shock', is a joke. I agree that it trivialises child abuse and rape but it also implies that oral sex is only performed by slaves on their masters. Any teenager knows that oral sex forms part of any loving relationship and is very effective against young and unwanted pregnancy.

In my opinion, to compare smoking to oral sex will only make it more attractive to teenagers should they believe the fun and pleasure to be the same.

February 24, 2010 at 10:09 | Unregistered CommenterMichael Peoples

Like the phrasing, Specky !

'Prig' is ONE word for them.

And the above image ALONE should be sufficient to alert the Doubters to the true nature of the people who are taking over the running of our Planet.

OUR Planet ?

Now fast becoming THEIR World.

In which you'd better be a 'Team-Player' - or else !

February 24, 2010 at 10:22 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

Perhaps I am being totally thick, but I don't see the relationship at all between oral sex and smoking, no matter what age you are. I know the French are far more openly liberal regarding sex that we Brits are, but I what is the connection?

Or are they saying that it is as bad for your health to have oral sex as it is to smoke?

The only thing I really see is a young person possibly being forced into doing something they do not want with regard to oral sex and that the person doing the forcing could be any age; the cigarette seems totally superfluous.

Lyn -

You are FAR from 'thick'.

But you ARE being a little too 'logical' about it.

The psychology of the ad is clearly designed to by-pass the need for rational discussion, and (as it were) go straight for the Psychic Jugular - by provoking feelings of disgust, repulsion, and guilt.

But there's a rather interesting SUBLIMINAL message buried in there, too - aimed (one suspects) at PARENTS.

The youthful models were obviously chosen for their brother-and-sister similarity.

Not just ANY old Child Abuse - but INCESTUOUS child-abuse, to boot.

A variation on the 'Michelle-and-Papa' theme.

Yes, the EFFECT on a youthful audience MAY be amusing at a CONSCIOUS level.

But it's at the DEEPER levels that such adverts seek to work their malign, festering magic.

In terms of INTENTION, I find the whole thing deeply SINISTER.

The REAL 'message' ?

NOTHING is Taboo in the Fight Against The Evils Of Tobacco........................

February 24, 2010 at 11:00 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

Oh my god, just when I thought things couldnt get any worse.
I must be thicker Lyn, as I didnt know what the picture conveyed until I read the blogs.
Thought on first glance that Bill Clinton had taken a career change.
I can just hear the teenagers in France after seeing this, laughing all the way to the tobacconists while putting nasty thoughts into their heads.
What sort of a mentality or what form of thinking goes on in the minds of those who are trying to control us,
They must be under the impression that their control is complete.
It just beggars belief.

February 24, 2010 at 11:17 | Unregistered Commenterann

Thank you Martin V.

I guess all we can hope for is that more people think too logically, as I did!

You are definitely correct though in what you say 'NOTHING is Taboo in the Fight Against The Evils Of Tobacco........................'

Personally, I find the adverts using children singing 'I'd do anything ...' bordering on child abuse and exploitation. Ultimately, I suppose, it just shows how desperate the government and their 'associates' such as Ash, are that they need to stoop so low!

The other thing I find totally corrupt is that at dire financial times such as these and the government departments are spending millions on such trash to show on tv and put over the radio airwaves, without all the other trash that is shown on billboards or advertised in newspapers and magazines - at the same time the NHS and our Armed Forces are crying out for more funding, not to mention schools.

Double standards, or what? They don't care about children and their wellbeing, just about winning a battle they chose to start on 1 July 2007 and which is not going there way as well as they had hoped by now.

Regarding the French advert, I think I can see the majority of France sticking 2 fingers up at it! I darn well hope so, anyway.

""The campaign targets young people who see cigarettes as symbols of emancipation, of freedom, when it really causes dependency and submission," Droits des Non-Fumeurs said in an online discussion." (from the Telegraph report).

Agree with previous comments but we know that no depths are too low for the antis to sink.

...and what is it with the French and father/caughter relationships with sexual undertones (Martin V's comment)?

February 24, 2010 at 11:46 | Unregistered CommenterJoyce

Lyn -

Yes, I find the appalling financial WASTE of all this garbage equally depressing.

Would the countless millions not have been better spent on GENUINE research into the REAL causes of Cancer, and their possible cure ?

Even if that meant handing some dosh to the tobacco companies to finance THEIR quest for the 'safe' cigarette ?

But - there's ME being overly 'logical'.

Yet this is Small Potatoes compared with the ASTRONOMICAL cost of our Climate Change Act (designed to 'combat' a danger that doesn't even EXIST).

Various figures have been quoted - up to £400 BILLION.

Imagine if Santa dropped even HALF that amount in your piggy bank, Lyn.

Just think of all the good and creative things YOU could do with it.

In the meantime, millions of us toil away at jobs most of us hate, in an increasingly stressful, joyless, society - just to keep a rapacious Apparat in the condition to which it is fast becoming accustomed.

Why ARE so few NOT more angry ?

Beats me.

What a topsy-turvy World this has become:

Conservatives like me calling for Revolution.

Trendy Radicals fighting for the Status Quo.

Maybe it IS just a nightmare, after all: caused by Arnott Syndrome - the result of excessive cheese consumption just before bedtime.........

February 24, 2010 at 13:02 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

Backfire alert. This advert says smoking=oral sex. The message that will be absorbed is not the text.

February 24, 2010 at 13:19 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous Cowherd

Its a total shambles, we've gone the full circle of crazy.
The antis just have to keep up the momentum to keep themselves in a job.
They have to keep up the pretense of strong leadership coming up to the election to make the brainwashed feel they're being looking after and to make them feel secure.
Its all very well for the prolatariat to be unemployed but unthinkable for themselves to be in the same boat. What 'message' would that send out.
Be prepared for more mock concern about our health to come, not to mention advertisements proclaiming smokers could have links to devil worship (hope I'm not giving them ideas here, as their modus is just words, to be shuffled around for maximum impact).
There's an election looming after all.

February 24, 2010 at 13:34 | Unregistered Commenterann

If smoking is so disgustingly intrusive, then so also must the smell of boiled cabbage or fried bacon. Or in fact any odour at all.

The only solution can be to simply close down all pubs, cafes, and restaurants, lest somebody smells something that they don't like. I can't see any other solution.

If people must only smoke in their own homes, then they must also drink and eat in their own homes. Oh, and they must also only shit in their own homes too. So no more public toilets either.

In fact, let's get rid of all public places, because there's the same problem everywhere. So no more libraries, shops, offices, assemblies, dance halls, skating rinks, museums. Everyone must stay in their own homes all the time, and do all their shopping and work online at home. Nobody must actually be allowed to meet anybody else, in case there's an odd smell about them.

There is another solution, however. And that is that rather than everyone staying at home, all those sniffy bastards who don't like the smell of anything should stay at home all the time instead, and never be allowed out, ever. We already have some fine institutions organised along these lines. They're called prisons.

February 24, 2010 at 14:29 | Unregistered Commenteridlex

This campaign is nothing more than a wratcheting up of the smoker as abuser message. It is also starting in the UK. ASH says we are murderers and we are killing our children in their thouands! They will keep chipping away at it long enough until it becomes truth. It is up to each and every one of us to fight this with everyhting we have got.

February 24, 2010 at 15:09 | Unregistered CommenterPat Nurse

A message from France.
This ad has created widespread anger-and not just from the feminist organisations as UK press coverage suggests. My bet is that it will be withdrawn shortly.
One question that will probably not be asked, unfortunately, is where this group- which is not large- got the money from for the campaign

February 24, 2010 at 16:55 | Unregistered CommenterRichard Ward

Good points Martin V. I would just say however that there has been some questioning in high places about the facts of climate change and I see that as being far more likely to be amended than the smoking ban.

This is not to say that I do not agree with you. The billions being spent on this fantasy would go a long way to getting this country back on its feet following the deepest recession in decades. That done, then hopefully GENUINE research, rather than the Mickey Mouse kind that just drains precious resources, can be started into many of the ills that befall us mere humans, not just cancer.

Then again, perhaps we are just living in cloud cuckoo land!

February 24, 2010 at 16:59 | Unregistered CommenterLyn

"some questioning in high places "

Well, Lyn, I'd be more convinced if there had been a little more SERIOUS 'questioning' somewhat earlier on in the day.

The Higher Life Forms had as much as access to the facts as the rest of us.

Which - given that SOME of them helped to CREATE the 'facts' in the first place - is scarcely surprising.

Still - Al Gore's only human, I suppose.

As are Prince Charles, Stern, Blair, Cameron, Obama, the entire staff of the IPCC, the BBC, the Royal Society............. and Barbra Streissand.

Sadly, they lack MY advantages....................

February 24, 2010 at 19:06 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

Martin V, I know what you are saying, but the questioning that has gone on, however late in the day, is more than what has happened so far regarding the smoking ban!

The biggest worry is that we have people in power, around the world, who are so darned gullible! Or are they just plain stupid and even need someone to show them how to hold their knife and fork?

February 24, 2010 at 19:58 | Unregistered CommenterLyn

Turn it around on them.

If the cigarettes are lit, then the paedo is about to get a nasty surprise. Therefore it is vital that all children take up smoking at once as a protective measure against the pervs.

I think the ad makes clear why the likes of ASH want the children smoke-free. It's because they like their victims to smell fresh. The ad is definitely an antismoker's subliminal dream.

Is that unfair? Tough. I don't see any fairness or compromise coming from the antismokers so I don't see why we smokers should play fair either.

It's time to give as good as we get, and watch them bleat.

February 24, 2010 at 21:22 | Unregistered CommenterLeg-iron

I would like to say "Specky" I do not think you are far wrong on that and you have such a good way of putting it.

I could not work out either what it is supposed to portray to the younger generation, either.
You could also take it as,"if you like cigarettes, you may also like this". Whatever way, it is disgusting and it really makes you wonder what goes through the minds of those who come up with such vile thoughts or connections!!

February 24, 2010 at 22:17 | Unregistered Commentermandyv

No mention of cigarettes in this recent study on oral cancer and sex
"Sexual behaviours are associated with cancer risk at the head and neck cancer subsites that have previously been associated with HPV infection."

February 25, 2010 at 0:16 | Unregistered CommenterFredrik Eich

Reminds me of the guy in New Zealand (or was it Australia) who said that letting teachers who smoke educate the indiginous people was like letting paedophiles teach children. Someone made a very good point about this particular ad on another blog, and I have also seen it referred to elsewhere. What is in the minds of people who think up these kind of adverts? Would you have thought about it. Do you go around thinking about middle aged men making youngsters suck their apendages? I don't. What kind of people do?

February 25, 2010 at 0:28 | Unregistered Commentertimbone

Lyn -

I take your point, of course.

Bear in mind, however, that the Ban only came into force in 2007.

The First Assessment Report of the IPCC, on the other hand, was published twenty years ago - in 1990.

That was the report in which the SCIENTISTS said (in effect) that there was NOTHING to worry about, but the BUREAUCRATS insisted that there WAS.

Pray to God we don't have to wait so long for Doubts To Start Creeping In about THIS scam..................

February 25, 2010 at 0:33 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

"What kind of people do?"

Emotionally-stunted and unattractive people with an impoverished Love-Life is ONE possibility, Timbone.

I name no names, however.......................

February 25, 2010 at 0:47 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

Martin V, our only hope is that once one scam has been highlighted, others tend to be highlighted hot on the heels.

It might be a vain hope, but I sincerely hope that the SHS scam and all the other smoking scams with it are very soon laid bare.

February 26, 2010 at 9:10 | Unregistered CommenterLyn

Lyn -

Amen to that.

But more importantly:

WHO is behind them ?

And WHY ?

Thereby hangs a VERY Dark Tale, I think.

And it's not been properly told yet..........
