Boris for mayor!
Excellent news! Boris Johnson is to stand as a Conservative candidate to become the next mayor of London. Politics suddenly got interesting again. If my reading of Boris is right, he's a laissez-faire politician and therefore the opposite of most of today's politicians (of all parties) who increasingly favour state intervention as a means of controlling people's behaviour.
Unfortunately, our elected representatives are under enormous pressure to justify their existence (which usually translates as more and more legislation), so there is no guarantee that BJ wouldn't fall into the same trap. Nevertheless, his selection and election - should it happen - could be the turning point that many of us are working so hard to achieve.
Support Boris - the revolution starts here!

Unfortunately BJ (other than having amusing initials) is so gaff prone that his reputation with anybody than other dyed-in-the-wool Tories is shot to pieces. His buffoon like mentality and Colonel Blimp mannerisms combined with the public school mop of tussled blond hair, sends completely the wrong message to London voters. That the Tories "cannot be serious" (in the words of John McInroe). This is the biggest gift to Livingstone that the Tories could have developed. Well done, own goal scored!
Not necessarily. Boris is not your 'average, run of the mill' Tory. In spite of his faults and weaknesses (and I realise that he has spoken out and upset people), I believe he is more honest than most in that particular world, where honesty seems to be a rare quality. Boris may be the man who gives people like Ken Livingstone a run for their money and they deserve that. The man has personality and is far more interesting than most of the boring clones who appear in politics today. He does not appear to be politically correct, so that's got to be positive for starters.
Probably BJ is about the only candidate the Tories could field who stands a chance of beating Ken Livingstone. A more mainstream candidate is likely to have at least supported if not been involved with the decision to scrap the GLC. Time for the smoke to move on?
I cannot remember who said this, but I did find it amusing and so true.
Boris Johnson is an intelligent man masquerading as a buffoon, whereas Ken Livingstone is a buffoon masquerading as an intelligent man.
I think Boris would be great for Mayor, he seems like honesty is his greatest quaility too, which seems very rare nowadays.
I think those with a sense of humour will love this video, southpark, has a great take on how the antis "use" the children. Well that is how it comes across to me. It takes about 20 mins and really need watching to the end. It is brilliant.

BJ WILL GET MY VOTE WITHOUT FAIL
MAY BE WE MIGHT GET SOME SENSE WITH HUMOUR
THIS GOVERMENT HAS GONE MAD
THESE STUPID LAWS THEY KEEP BRINGING OUT NO WONDER
THE BRITISH PUBLIC DONT GIVE A TOSS ANY MORE
SO MUCH FOR A FREE COUNTRY
IWONDER IF ALL THE SERVICE MEN THAT DIED TO KEEP US FREE WOULD THINK OF BAN THIS BAN THAT
Three cheers for Boris, the only real politician, who speaks his mind and has principles. He obviously thought hard and long before entering the ring. If was a londoner then I would have no hesitation in plonking my cross firmly against Boris Johnson's name. Hip, Hip, Hooray!!!
Thank god for the likes of BJ - This could be fun!
If I lived in London, Boris would undoubtedly get my vote. But we shouldn't rejoice too much if he wins, as we can't rely on just one man to restore sanity to this Country or the freedoms we've lost. This is something we must all address individually and collectively until the roar deafens those who ignore us now.
I would vote for Boris also.
He is the *only* politician I know of who speaks honestly and reveals his frailties. He is human, and I am sick to the stomach of the image-consciousness and rehearsed/repeated phrases we've seen since the day the Labour Party were forced to shave off their beards. I thought at the time that this was a sign that their priorities were completely out of whack.
Vote Boris. At least he'll give us some fun (at last!)
Mandy - that South Park episode is wonderful. If the MPs had seen that before voting on the ban, they might have thought twice about it.
"If the MPs had seen that before voting on the ban, they might have thought twice about it."
Gerry, what makes you think they thought 'once' about it?
Realistically, I don't think it'll be down to the principals, policies or personalities in this election. It'll be whoever the media decide to back.
Unfortunately, London will probably still be saddled with Ken Livingstone. He's got too much of a hold on the minds of Londoners whatever they may say about him.
Pity though...
Fair point, Tony. I sit corrected!
And Boris really does cycle around London so perhaps we could be excused the cost of one car of the Mayor's expensive fleet.
Has he already been chosen as the Tory candidate for mayor? If yes, great!
The demise of Livingstone could mean the demise of the planned desalination plant in the Thames because it could not be run from the hot air generated by Ken at City Hall. However, laughter is much more stimulating and would be a great alternative to power the plant.
Boris is unique, honest, can laught at himself, and actually clever in the best sense. He is refreshingly human and the breath of fresh air we all need! It's the lies, double speak, and general hot air that actually pollutes our environments - but it's easier to blame it on the smokers!
As a Londoner, I can vouch that we desperately need Boris to oust the ghastly Red Ken.
I have never known anyone to take such liberties with the lives of Londoners, since Adolf Hitler tried it some 60 odd years ago.
Like Hitler, Ken also shows strong anti Semitic traits, but up to yet has always got away with it.
Everyone I speak to absolutely hate Red Ken and the way he has treated London, so let us just pray that Boris is finally selected by the Conservatives at their mayoral candidate, and that he gives ghastly Livingstone the bloody nose he so deserves.
Definitely voting for Boris! Ken is the new Hitler and is antisemitic too!
Best choice possible for the Tories and a change from the usual PC politician trying to control our lives!
Surely Boris is the Charles Kennedy of the Tory party,Livingstone must be rubbing his hands with glee.Boris just doesn't pretend to be a buffoon he is by far the biggest one in the British Isles
I think Boris would be a wonderful mayor. He wants to bring 'a bit of joy back into the lives of Londoners'. When did we last hear the present incumbent saying anything like that? My all-purpose slogan is 'Bring it on Boris' and I mean it.
Well, looks like my mini-slogan went down a storm there guys! Not a single post since. Mmm. wasn't quite the effect I had in mind.
I can only say again - and with a touch more passion - because this is a good guy for London I feel: Bring it on Boris, Bring it on. Good lad.
Boris is good for London unlike that Ken who ripped the Londoners off.
