Tonight's the night

Scared-100.jpgTonight we celebrate the publication of an important new book by Christopher Booker and Richard North. To quote the blurb, "Scared to Death examines the role played by scientists who have consistently misread or manipulated the evidence; by the media and lobbyists who eagerly promote the scare without regard to the facts; and by the politicians and officials who come up with an absurdly disproportionate response, leaving us all to pay a colossal price through the financial cost of misplaced and often completely ill-conceived legislation."

At risk of repeating myself, there are chapters on BSE, the Millennium Bug, bird flu, salmonella in eggs, global warming and passive smoking, to name a few. The book complements perfectly Forest's new Free Society campaign, which is why we decided to organise tonight's party at Boisdale in Belgravia. The event is now fully booked - but check back here tomorrow for a full report.

You know what's beginning to irritate me? All these nice little parties are great fun for you and your well heeled mates...that's fine...but what does it do to further our cause!
Only those that live in your neck of the woods are going to turn up - and even then it's exclusive.

I can't for the life of me see how this kind of self indulgence takes us forward.

Chris F J Cyrnik, you sound like some sort of left wing agitator, with your comments about being "well heeled". What on earth has being "well heeled" got to do with anything? What does it take in your book, to "further our cause", a cloth cap and a pair of hobnail boots perhaps?

Remember, many of this country's great battles, were won on the playing fields of Eton.

Chris: I am Joe Public and I went, all you had to do was phone Freya up at Forest HQ and gone too. It was a free evening and if you are trying to influence the debate, inviting MPs, journalists and opinion formers to be engaged, you have to create a damn good reason to go. Free booze and a relaxed atmosphere gets people through the doors. I spent a lot of time "working the room" and, frankly lost the plot on the smoking ban and had a good time, like everyone else. The bottom line is you have made your point to a lot of influential people and I hope they go away with a favourable message on your behal.
