The new militant tendency

Big Brother Watch reports that "Students at the Hundred of Hoo Comprehensive School in Medway have been running up to smokers in the street, shouting "ciggy busters" and snatching their cigarettes from them. And filming themselves doing it."

All this is with the "encouragement of the school and the cooperation of the police". Full story HERE. Makes you proud to be British.

Dear Home Secretary,

Enclosed, you will find an account of a recent 'exercise' in robbery on the Queen's highway by a mob of pupils from the local comprehensive.

As you will see, this remarkable piece of nonsense - calculated, sooner or later, to provoke a violent response - has apparently been perpetrated with the support, if not the active encouragement, of the school staff and local police.

I submit that such behaviour constitutes a Breach of the Peace at Common Law, as defined by the Appeal Court in R v Howell, since - at the very least - one of the elements of that judgement (damage to personal property in the presence of its owner) is clearly present.

What are YOU going to do to STOP it ?

Yours etc

August 19, 2010 at 11:02 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

It's the result of years of demonisation of smokers by the anti smoking lobby.
This behaviour is not repeat not acceptable in a civilised society.
Smokers are not aunt sallies that can be accosted in the street by gangs of brainwashed youths.
Not to mention the corruption of young minds by some very unscrupulous so called adults with an agenda of their own.
Teach your child to become a bigot... the police of course are there to help !
I have a right to defend myself against assualt .
If this happened to me ,and as sixth formers they are not minors.
I will take the neccesary comensurate action within the law to ensure my safety.
Whats next .....
KRISTALLNACHT ?

Dave A -

Although I wrote the above piece as an ironic 'joke', your welcome contact details for both the Kent Police and the stupid bitch (too strong ? Tough !) who runs the school, inspired me to send a REAL e-mail directly to Theresa May at the Home Office.

I also carbon-copied to the Kent Police and said headmistress.

I amended the final paragraph to read:

"What, pray, are YOU going to do to STOP this dangerous, socially unacceptable, and WHOLLY Un-British piece of social vigilantism - even in an era of a State-subsidised and media-supported hysteria about the Evils of Tobacco (to say nothing of a dumbed-down-by-design Public Education Service) ?

I make no mention of the cowardly connivance of the local 'constabulary'.

Yours sincerely,

Etc

I only trust that I shall not now be paid a visit in the early hours of the morning by the Men In Black.

Or a pack of trucculent schoolchildren...........................

August 19, 2010 at 11:43 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

And you can so easily see the concept being extended to, say, snatching Big Macs away from people eating them in the street while shouting "fat busters!"

Specky -

Quite right !

ONE day, somebody is going to pick on The Wrong Person, and that 'somebody' is going to DIE - or be very seriously injured.

In the mood I'm in right now (and I'm a peaceable, happy-go-lucky fellow by nature), if ANYONE tries that stunt with me, he's going to get a well-aimed punch to the throat.

Enough is enough !

What will the Media make of THAT ?

(And I really hope this is going to be one of those 'lively' threads !)

Yes , it is.

Thanks for the link.

And they're well down that road already in the States.

Those of a Fascistic disposition (WHATEVER they CALL themselves) ALWAYS target The Children first.

If only our 'kids' had been made to sit through a few Alex Jones videos - rather than that self-serving piece of sci-fi propaganda by Al Gore - there'd be some changes pretty soon that we would ALL welcome.

Not the sort of 'changes' They would welcome, though...............................

August 19, 2010 at 12:20 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

I agree with Martin - if this happened to me on the street - a well deserved punch would be on the way. And a citizen's arrest for assualt and robbery.

I wonder if the police would stand by if the BNP or the English Defence League ran down the high street ripping off burqas and niqabs?

Even if the targets were willing participants I am sure the police and council would find a myriad of charges to level at them.

August 19, 2010 at 12:56 | Unregistered CommenterMichael Peoples

The temptation to report this to the police or to the school (if you don't want to go too official on it), not on the basis of the cigarettes (of which, of course, they are already aware and totally unconcerned), but to add in that, in the process of snatching your cigarettes, one of these little sods also "conveniently" happened to take your mobile phone, or your purse, or your wallet or to "accidentally" cut your lip, or bruise your arm, or give you a panic attack must be HUGE. Just the shock factor of realising that by committing a tacitly-approved-of crime they are also laying themselves open to being accused of an unapproved-of one, too, might be enough to scare the little sh*ts and their scummy teacher back into the classrooms where they belong. Might even get the teacher a disciplinary warning, too, for placing the children in a position of risk - result!

August 19, 2010 at 13:40 | Unregistered CommenterMisty

Something similar happened to me a few weeks ago, I was sitting outside the pub minding my own. Pint in one hand, gasper in the other when an unknown guy approached me and asked for a cigarette - no please, so I refused. With my refusal he made a grab at my cigarette hand, the result being a burn on my wrist and an immediate blow to his lower rib cage and him threatening to call the police. I urged him to do so as I would be doing the same. Needless to say he backed down and off he went. What troubled was my reaction to this involuntary violence on my part. I have not hit anyone since the odd schoolboy fight over forty years ago and spent the next couple of days wondering if I had overreacted and worrying if I had hit the scum bag too hard and possible unintended consequences. Will I react in a similar fashion should it happen again? Probably!
NB I did not lose a drop of beer praise the Lord!

Dear Ms Gramegna and Medway Police,

I trust you are well.

Freedom2Choose are pro choice smoking organisaion and Alex Deane of Big
Brother Wath has brought to my attention your recent 6th Form Media Studies project on smokers. From the article it says that pupils "have been running up to smokers in the street, shouting "ciggy busters" and snatching their cigarettes from them. And filming themselves doing it." Also "Kent police in Medway were made aware of the planned filming, prior to the event taking place."

Finally "I knew we could not really go and film in public and attack people in that way and take goods off of them, so we devised a cunning plan.

We planted some people and we started with them. People were watching and
following us and at the end we tried with some other people."

I find this a criminal act of common assault and theft, it is also offensive. I find it beggars belief that police have not advised you that on unwilling subjects an illegal act has taken place and have not advised this to be stopped. If these attacks were carried out on ethnic minorites or gays there would be a justifiable outrage. Can I ask you what is the difference between your actions and a "happy slapping" filmed by yobs?

I also understand that this stunt maybe repeated in September, I ask that it be stopped immediately.

I look forward to your reply.

And MY reply from the Medway Plods:

SENT ON BEHALF OF CHIEF SUPERINTENDENT CORBISHLEY

Dear Mr V,

I am writing to acknowledge receipt of your complaint, which has been forwarded to Chief Superintendent Steve Corbishley by Enquiries Support, the contents of which are noted.

I have passed your email to Chief Inspector Peter deLozey who will look into the issues raised in your email. You will be contacted again in the near future when we are in a position to give you a detailed response.

Regards

And I'm sure that my 'detailed response' will have at least one 'committed' in it (it's the way they're taught to speak these days - without really SAYING anything).

I'm breathless with anticipation.

No reply from the Headmistress as yet.

Ok - so maybe we DO have to suffer (part of the Human Condition etc).

But let's not always do it in SILENCE......................................

August 19, 2010 at 23:15 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

Although it may not have the same severity, in principal, it is identical. People running up to smokers in the street and snatching their cigarettes whilst shouting "ciggy busters"/Storm troopers wrecking shops on main streets shouting "Juden"

O dear, did someone mention Godwin?

August 19, 2010 at 23:39 | Unregistered Commentertimbone

We may want to re-ink our nibs and write to the local stop smoking smoking nanny.

"Rachel Noxon, Medway's tobacco control strategic co-ordinator also gave her approval for this stunt. You can contact her as follows:

Rachael Noxon, Tobacco Control Strategic Coordinator
Medway public health directorate
telephone: 01634 331074 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 01634 331074 end_of_the_skype_highlighting
email: rachael.noxon@medway.gov.uk

It is interesting to note that Medway Council is cutting funding for before and after school clubs for children and for library books whilst retaining the "services" of the Tobacco Control Strategic Coordinator and the spy cars featured on this blog a couple of days ago. Medway Council is a Tory council and it gives an interesting insite into their take on Dave's proclamation about smaller government and getting the state off our backs."

You may also may want to scribble a line to Medway's Chief Executive Neil Davies.

Anybody up for a visit to Medway in September in a minibus. We all have knuckledusters.

August 20, 2010 at 7:24 | Unregistered CommenterPeter James

" We all have knuckledusters."

Frankly, I'm surprised that They haven't re-classified the Cigarette as an Offensive Weapon yet.

And just think of the potential harm that could be done by Cigars (stabbing infants in the their prams while Mum's on her mobile), and Pipes (smashing the fragile skulls of the elderly) etc.

As for Butane lighters.................................

No, such outrages may not have happened yet (stay calm, now).

But they COULD (the Precautionary Principle): that's the point.

Who shall save us from such horrors ?

Apart from Batman and Robin (naturally)...............................

"Dave's proclamation about smaller government and getting the state off our backs.............."

What the Common-Purpose-Twins (esp the Dave one) MEAN by 'smaller government' is:

1) Slightly smaller or just-about-the-same government at the Centre. (ie fewer pot plants at the DOE etc) But:

2) Much BIGGER government in YOUR area (where they can keep an eye on you).

The latter is also known as 'Local Democracy'.

And what THAT means is:

1) Even bossier and more 'visionary' Chief Executives and Tomorrow's Leaders than we enjoy now (the 'Local' bit), but:

2) Enhanced opportunities for the Serfs (or 'electorate') to go running around with balloons, and wearing pink fright-wigs on Breast Cancer Awareness Day, and then getting praised by some Important Ponce for their 'community spirit' (the 'Democracy' bit).

In America, the Federal Government ('Feral Government', perhaps ?) is in the process of destroying what little remains of the States' powers of self-government - the very powers 'guaranteed' by the Constitution.

What chance does Warmington-on-Sea have ?

You know it makes sense - especially when most people DO know the name of their MP, but are generally CLUELESS about the identity (or function) of their local Councillor.

Electors - like NHS patients - just get in the way of Good Administration.

Yep, a lot of sense.....................................

August 20, 2010 at 12:32 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

The video has been removed from YouTube. Is this because it has been deemed offensive or is it as a result of the backlash against these scumbags?

Hopefully while the video was on there, the people involved have been recognised and maybe they might get a reaction the next time they are out and about the streets. I do not advocate violence but if some of these maggots get a bit of grief for what they have done there will be no sympathy from me.

I think you have hit the nail squarly on the head with the mention of "common purpose", the trouble is nowadays is that nearly all the town halls in the country are run by these idiots, they will keep pushing until something gives, and give it will, theres a lot of seething silent anger out there at the moment, and, its only a matter of time....

Here is Kent Police's inadequate reply.

Dear Mr. Atherton,

Thank you for contacting us to highlight your concerns and those of your members
with the recent Hundred of Hoo School 'Ciggie Busters' campaign/event.

The school contacted Medway police prior to the event and discussed it with our
events manager. We were advised that actors would play the role of the 'smokers'
with students approaching them, before taking the cigarette from them and 'advising
them' about the health issues.

In addition to this Medway NHS were to also be involved as well as the council.

We did advise the school that to approach non-actors could cause problems and to our knowledge no non-actors were approached. No one has made any allegations of crime regarding this matter, (in so far as no one who was approached has made any complaints).

The school involved police and other agencies in their planning and I believe took
on board all our advice and comments. The filming and actions were part of a project
the students were under taking and I am told the cameras were clearly visible to all
in attendance. This was a deliberate part of the planning as overt cameras and the
use of actors would hopefully prevent the people being approached being offended in any way.

If a person who was not an actor was approached and their property taken etc. we
would consider their complaint. However, as no one appears to have been approached in this manner, we shall not at this time be taking this matter further.

I am sorry you feel offended by this incident, but I can assure you that it was
meant to be a light hearted educational project, with no harm intended.

Yours faithfully,

Michael
A/ Det Chief Inspector
Medway Police Station.

To all you made so incandescent about such a trivial item I suggest you go and fight a real war , where those that are determined to oppress the rights of others are prepared to to blow your head off. It will certainly focus your mind and have you question your values. You sad, small people, amateurs, armchair warriors. Return to your screens and keep playing those games.

August 26, 2010 at 0:18 | Unregistered CommenterK2

"I suggest you go and fight a real war ."

"Return to your screens."

Can't do BOTH, I'm afraid.

Hell - I think we'll go with the Killing Option, shall we ?

It's much more exciting - if marginally less creative than the alternatives.

Thanks for taking the time out to share your Wisdom with us, K2 !
