A pint and a pie
Friday, April 16, 2010
It was my daughter's birthday yesterday so tonight we are going to see Legally Blonde at London's Savoy Theatre. Meanwhile I have been reminded for the umpteenth time that at 5.30 on April 15, 1997, I was minutes from missing the birth because - weary of waiting - I had, er, wandered off and gone back to "work". Truth is, I was thirsty and I was hungry. I did what any man would do ...

I must say that I do miss the older style pubs andthe food served in them. Pubs that do food now are mostly 'Gastropubs' that serve the same banal crap wherever you go. What happened the mince pies that burned your lips and chin when you bit into them? Where are the scotch eggs and pickled guerkins?
It is not just the smoking ban that ruined the pubs.
I don't think a lot of the average crap served in pubs today, but I can't say I'd be overjoyed to tuck into those ghastly pork pies of yesteryear either. From what I remember of them they had pastry as thick as your arm, a tiny piece of pork in the centre and a huge dollop of some gelatinous stog on top of that. As for Scotch eggs, and gherkins, what the hell have they got to do with drinking? They go about as much with a pint as an ice cream.
When Simon said he was thirsty and hungry, and did what any man would do, I thought he meant he took his nice young secretary out to a good restaurant for lunch....
By the way, for those who do not know, "STOG" is Latin for "Stodge".....well...er...er..
You wont get pork pies, scotch eggs or tasty food like that in pubs anymore.
It was slipped off the menu without notice or consultation, just like the smoking ban, and replaced with halal food.
Its all halal meat pies and sausage rolls now, so the Muslims can feel more British.
In Glasgow a scotch egg, pork pie and pickled gherkin is a three course meal...
