The Tories and the great British pub

Concluding our 2009 party conference announcements (see earlier posts), our final event is a drinks party at the Conservative conference in Manchester. The event, on Tuesday 6th October, is co-hosted by The Freedom Association and is designed to raise awareness of the Save Our Pubs and Clubs campaign.
Ironically, the early part of the event clashes with a Save The Great British Pub Quiz hosted by Conservative party chairman Eric Pickles which the party is promoting as one of the highlights of the conference. Do the Tories really want to save our pubs, or is this just another worthless PR exercise? You decide.

LITTLE GIRL: "Mummy, what's a 'pub' ?"
MOTHER: "How did you find out about that, Tabitha ?"
LITTLE GIRL: "We did it in Cultural Awareness Class today."
MOTHER: "Well, it used to be a bit like a Sushi Bar. Only not as nice......."
LITTLE GIRL: "Did YOU ever go to one, Mummy ?"
MOTHER: "Don't be silly, Darling. How OLD do you think I am ?"
PR skills are the only talent today's mainstream politicians have got. I wish they would realise that they are playing with real people's lives. Blue Labour cares about votes and spin - not truth, fairplay or justice.
I think the Conservatives are playing at being seen to be fair, ie: we have listened to the smoking arguement and will make a decision on the ban after the election.
(say nothing until we get into power, we will remove the hunting ban, and string the smokers along)
UKIP says all along it will remove the smoking ban.
Guess who gets my vote.
Absolutely, Mary.
We can only show the strength of our anger at the next election. I can't understand why any smoker would vote for any other party. Another example of why all pro-choicers should stand as one!
The three main parties will only listen to us if we prove that we matter - the strength of our united voice is all we need.
We still need to get in touch with the majority of smokers, though, Pat. I think that the recent 'smoking festival' was a fantastic way to do it and yet another reason for getting publicans on side.
True, Joyce. Why not go and pop in to see your local landlord with the idea? The festival can be tailored to suit each pub's clientele.
Emma at the Brewer said the income from the festival will help to sustain her pub over the lean winter months.
Landlords would be daft not to give it a try --- and we have seen that when called upon to help, pro-choice groups will pull out all the stops and get involved.
I intend to, Pat, but firstly I need to get onto the F2C site and each time I try a weird screen comes up!!
