New Zealand shelves tobacco display ban
The anti-smoking movement suffered a setback yesterday with the news that New Zealand prime minister John Key has decided not to go ahead with a tobacco display ban.
Key made the announcement during an interview on Australian TV. He cited the lack of evidence that a tobacco display ban actually reduces youth smoking as the main reason for reversing proposals for the ban. He also said that the detrimental impact the measures would have on small businesses was a large factor in his decision.
Wouldn't it be nice to think that the Scottish government follows suit when the Tobacco and Primary Medical Services (Scotland) Bill is published tomorrow. Don't hold your breath. All they're interested in is gesture politics. They don't care about the consumer or the small retailer. We can all go to hell.

Being a speaker at a symposium in central London today, I am bound to be not too specific, but suffice as to say that the future is not too good. I assume the reference was to The Department Of Health who allegedly has the bit between their teeth. Reading between the lines if the DoH has its own way, alcohol would be going the same way as tobacco. Health warnings, labelling, restictions and bans.
My instict is that nannyism has reached its zenith under Labour and it is their last chance to make their mark before Labour is anillated in the next election.
Are the Tories got the gumption not to be swayed or intimadated? Don't put your lottery money on on it.
I touched ojn this story here and then went rambling.
At least there's one sane PM in the world.
It remains to be seen if the Tories would be any better in govt, I doubt it as it seems to be part of the package these days for every govt to have these stupid campaigns and directives as a subterfuge to keep our minds off the ball to enable them push through their hard policies.
That said, in my opinion labour is better out than in.
