Bullying smokers

Remember the letter I sent to the Telegraph last week (see HERE)? Well, the Sunday Telegraph published it yesterday. Click HERE and scroll down until you come to the words "Bullying smokers".

Reader Comments (27)

Simon.

Yes........I noticed your letter. I suppose the fact that the DT published it shows that not all the MSM are biased against people who enjoy tobacco. It may even be that the MSM in general are beginning to realise that there is something iffy about the demonisation of smokers since it is obvious (see Sir Liam D's latest outburst against parents allowing their children to sample a little wine or beer with their dinner) that the new target for demonisation is alcohol and a large number of journalists are dipsomaniacs - almost. The target after that is likely to be fatties.

Let us hope that there are many people who will read it and agree, but be prepared, of course, for a lot of hate mail from the zealots.

"When is a leading opposition politician going to stand up and say that enough is enough? David Cameron talks about tackling Big Government, but on issues such as this he and his spokesmen remain largely silent."

I did like this bit Simon. It's about time the opposition had this punched in their face. It affects everything - social lives, economics, crime, political preferences, communities and dare I say it - health. I know many who have been affected with ill-health as a result of this ban and all I hear from the antis is that they don't need to wash as often.

Anyway, I've deserted the opposition until they at least decide to debate the issue. As far as I can see, they are only listening to a one-sided story that is totally blinkered by zealots.

I have my own thoughts on why they do this, but I'm sure we're all privvy to our own thoughts.

December 21, 2009 at 23:24 | Unregistered CommenterMary

It'll be interesting to see whether THIS figures as an 'issue' in the forthcoming televised 'debate' (DO try not to laugh, please !) between The Three Faces of the New One-Party State.

As Delboy used to say:

"Jackanory, Jackanory................"

December 21, 2009 at 23:59 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

I get the impression that issues affecting 20-25% of the voting electorate doesn't matter anymore.

Mind you, when you take into account their family, friends, businesses they used to frequent, taxis, hairdressers, high-street shops (for clothes, make-up, shoes, handbags, perfume), markets, cafes, suppliers, need I go on.... perhaps they may begin to realise that it's more than just the 20-25% of the electorate that a draconian ban has affected.

All these businesses need accountants and solicitors as well...... sorry I can't help myself.

That's before I begin to mention the strain on our health and police services as a result of a draconian ban rather than one that caters for everybody.

December 22, 2009 at 0:10 | Unregistered CommenterMary

Well, I've sent my tuppence-worth to the 'Telegraph' anyway.

It SHOULD be on our side, after all............

December 22, 2009 at 11:15 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

Problem is if you look at the climategate scandal they whole political elite and the MSM have been caught out well and trully with their pants down lying and distorting the truth for their own ends oblivious to the fact that it is blatently obvious that it is a big con that will cost us thousends in taxes.
This shows a complete contempt for the dwindling electorate .
When this stupid attitude is transposed to the issue of smokers rights it is apparent that the contemptous self serving agenda that big government has is just that ,government no longer cares what we the people think.
To put it simply what the fools do not realise is that eventually governence without mandate from the people will lead to disaster for the political classes, at the moment the peoples barometer is on contempt.

"SIR –

Simon Clark (Letters, December 20th) quite rightly denigrates the growing power of the Bully State, perpetrated by our lobotomised ‘representatives’ and their true masters – the legions of taxpayer-funded officials (local, national, and supra-national) and their corporate and lobbyist friends.

Just like the Great Global Warming Scammers and their media groupies, the all-powerful and never-to-be-questioned Health Lobby exploits the gullibility of a timidly compliant and poorly-educated Middle Class by force-feeding it on a constant diet of phony ‘science’, synthetic panic, and fashionable guilt (especially where the Little Ones are concerned – in true Nazi fashion).

As a result, the curtain-twitchers from Acacia Avenue – the ones who never really cared for tobacco – are quite happy to sit by while 11 million of their fellow-citizens are demonised, persecuted, and continuously harangued by the State like naughty schoolchildren who won’t do as they are told. The fact that we pay an additional £8 billion over and above any putative costs to the sacred ‘Nation Health Service’ (which kills considerably more people than smoking ever did, by the way) hardly receives a mention, much less a ‘thank you’.

A sensible segregation between Smokers and (tobacco-hating) Non-Smokers is all we ask. Politicians who think themselves clever enough to adapt an entire planetary climate system can surely manage that ?

The Party that promises that, once again, I may be free to enjoy a fag with my pint down at my local - one of Life's Great Pleasures - is the one that gets my vote. The Party that still insists that the elderly war veteran must forever more be denied the solace of his pipe, his crossword, and a bit of congenial company every lunchtime isn’t worth the vote of anyone who still believes that Freedom is Rather A Good Thing - even in the Age of the Religious Health Fanatic.

Are you listening, Mr Cameron ? "

December 22, 2009 at 12:16 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

Oh and on the climate gate issue.
I have been cheated out of 1,000's of pounds in taxes by what is little more than a lie and a scam.
I want my money back ,the money you have stolen from me and every other tax paying citizen of this country.
Of course that will not happen as if I refuse to pay you will throw me in prison will you not.
The elite behave more like "gangsters" and "thieves" than leaders.

December 22, 2009 at 12:34 | Unregistered CommenterSpecky

"The elite behave more like "gangsters" and "thieves" than leaders......."

Truer than you think, Specky !

Especially in the States, where the poor buggers have been paying Federal Income Tax since 1913 - despite the fact that NO Act of Congress was ever passed to sanction it. It is quite unconstitutional. But a LAWFUL refusal to pay can still land you in jail for 50 years.

But, hey, who cares about the Rule of Law, anyway ?

Certainly not the EU, for starters.

At least the Mafia listens..............

December 22, 2009 at 13:32 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

You are right Martin V, Cameron started all this and anyone that votes for him is entitled to all they get. My vote goes to Mandlson's party, at least he is honest.

December 22, 2009 at 13:34 | Unregistered CommenterClare

Clare, Mandleson doesn't have a party and he is about as honest as a ferret saying he is hiding in your trousers for the warmth. And as for Cameron starting all this, he didn't at all, so I don't know what either you or Martin V are talking about.

December 22, 2009 at 13:44 | Unregistered CommenterB.Jaisus

Mandelson was THE architect of NuLabour, a man closely connected to the Global Elite, ever wondered why he keeps coming back whatever he has done? Honest? I've heard it all now.

'Steal a little and they throw you in jail, steal a lot and they make you a king'.I think Dylan said that.

December 22, 2009 at 14:56 | Unregistered CommenterZitori

B.Jaisus -

It's precisely because Mr Cameron DIDN'T 'start' all this nonsense, but WILL - with a fair wind - shortly be in a position to END it that I addressed the question to him.

Santa Claus doesn't have a party as yet, alas.

Seems reasonable enough to me............

December 22, 2009 at 15:31 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

I never mentioned Bob Dylan and as far as I know he does smoke so you got your facts wrong there Zitori?

And as for Mandelson ever being in jail, I think you need to do your homework.

December 22, 2009 at 15:57 | Unregistered CommenterClare

Martin V said,
It's precisely because Mr Cameron DIDN'T 'start' all this nonsense, but WILL

So you think he will start it all over again do you? Kindly tell me what for?

December 22, 2009 at 15:59 | Unregistered CommenterClare

A lot of truth being spoken here, shame that I can't think of one politician who would know TRUTH if it got up and smacked him/her repeatedly in the face!

December 22, 2009 at 16:00 | Unregistered CommenterLyn

You hit the nail on its head there Lyn, a lot of truth to be sure, but also a lot of lies.
Poloticians certainly wouldnt know the truth if it were eight feet tall and a mile wide, but there again who does these days?

December 22, 2009 at 16:29 | Unregistered CommenterB.Jaisus

Clare, I haven't come across a reply that showed as much misunderstanding of a post than yours. What on earth are you talking about?!! I haven't stopped laughing yet. At least you've brought a smile to my face.Do you need some sort of translator?

December 22, 2009 at 17:23 | Unregistered CommenterZitori

It still beggers believe that Cameron will not latch onto this personal choice theme. He talks about rolling back the state control of our lives, but, to be honest, I really do not think he has come out with any real policies in this regard.

It is not just about the smoking ban, that was just the gate-opener. It allowed New Labour to think that if we can get away with this, we can really start imposing our will on the general populous - backed up with more draconian legislation, punitive fines and an army of jobsworths to police it.

Come on Cameron, have you no fire in your belly, to say what you intend to do about the bully state. There are literally thousands of votes to be gained if only he had the bottle.

December 22, 2009 at 17:32 | Unregistered CommenterBill

Bill -

Thank God someone gets the point..............

And I reckon the number of additional votes Mr C could reasonably expect would be in the MILLIONS.

But maybe he's just crap at Politics.

And Arithmetic.

December 22, 2009 at 17:58 | Unregistered CommenterMartin V

Personally I think Cameron will treat the whole issue (smoking) as an annoyance which hopefully will go away. No way will he make any decisive changes to the bully state. If he does £ 500 donation to Forest for a party. I hope i can part with that money.

December 23, 2009 at 7:02 | Unregistered CommenterPeter James

you are very rude zirorie and it isnt me that needs a translater but you.Talk about bullying smokers, you sound like one of the people who are doing ecxactly that

December 23, 2009 at 9:33 | Unregistered CommenterClare

Clare, Mandy isnt called the prince of darkness for nothing.
If he copped on that a few million votes were going abegging to clinch an election win, be it smoking or drinking, he'd conjure up a scenario to make it acceptable to the most notorious hardliners, just to keep his hand in whatever party was on the winning side.

December 23, 2009 at 10:30 | Unregistered Commenterann

Having read the above, I haven't enjoyed such a laugh for a little while! There are currently 57 pubs/clubs etc. closing down per week and I believe, according to PRM statistics, this could rise to 65 per week after the New Year. Eventually all the 'for sale', 'to let' signs and boarded up premises will be noticed by even the thickest and most stupid politicians.
Small businesses are generally going to the wall rapidly. As for The Prince of Darkness (Mandy) being trusted - well, it's tantamount to putting Dracula in charge of a blood bank!

Yes, we are living in a bully state - nanny has turned into a bully, but bullies are normally the biggest cowards. Trying to ignore all this and that it will simply fizzle out will ultimately cause the downfall of a lot of politicians (regardless of political parties) because the atmosphere in this country this Christmas is the dampest, harshest most miserable and oppressive one which I, personally, have ever sensed and experienced. People over 80 years old are saying the same as me and they lived through the depression, the war years and its aftermath. These bullies are stepping up their tactics now because they know that they are 'on their way out' and they will be made to listen.

December 23, 2009 at 11:26 | Unregistered CommenterJenny of Yorkshire

I totally agree Jenny.

I'm in a northern labour heartland and feel that the bullies are on their way out.

The simple principle is - you can't get away with treating millions of ordinary law-abiding citizens worse than scum forever. There comes a point, when the ordinary law-abiding citizen says 'enough is enough' and I'm gald to see that this is now happening on a daily basis.

December 24, 2009 at 0:36 | Unregistered CommenterMary

I guess, if we hadn't been so blind we could have seen this coming years ago when criminals get more consideration than victims!

Totally ridiculous, you break into someones' home and then sue them for defending themselves and their family and WIN! Criminal gets off scott free and the victim is prosecuted - totally mad!
