PM bursts election bubble

GordonBrown-100.jpg Gordon has bottled it. I suspect that no-one is more relieved than the Conservatives (see below), who are clearly not yet ready for government, or the Lib Dems (Ming Campbell especially) who are trailing so badly in the polls. Full story HERE.

labour won the last election with a majority of 67 seats with only 22% of the electorate voting for them. If a party promised to scrap the TOTAL ban and all 25% of smokers voted, then that party would have a majority of over 100 seats.

Chas,

I tried to put a petition on No. 10's website re smoking ban back in May/June in which I stated that approximately 12 million people smoked in this country, a lot of people not to vote labour at the next election. The petition was rejected on the grounds that it was too political!!!

Anti smoking hysteria and antismoking legislation is not product of political will or product of particularly ideology but it is product of dangerous cult that griping nowadays world.
In time of prosperity the people don’t care too much about politics but they care about health and longevity.

It is nothing wrong to take care about own health otherwise it will insanity.

Taking in account that nowadays illnesses and diseases are correlated with decreased smoking population it is serious question should be people encouraged to start smoking.

On the other side the antismoking dogma is based on perverted science and it will not only be costly for human’s health but as well for civilisation as we know.

Dosnt matter if there is another petition at 10 downing street this governement has never listened to the general public. What makes you think that they are going to start now? I hope that Labour is knocked out of government by the conservatives when an election is called. It will be there own thought for making this country into a nanny state and dictating to the general public what we should eat drink smoke etc I want democracey back and the quicker this labour government is banished the better.

If I were Gordon Brown I wouldn't have even bothered to burst the election bubble. All the hype and speculation was coming from political commentators and journalists who had worked themselves up in to a frenzy based on their own whispers and rumours.

The Conservatives have at least 2 more years to come up with some radical and alternative policies to Labour. Some clear blue water would make politics more interesting again and the prospect of a change of government all the more exciting.

The only thin that could make anything 'exciting' in this country on a political level would be for someone to succeed where Guy Fawkes failed in 1605 - ignite the gunpowder and replace those inside with people who are actually prepared to listen to the opinions and views of ordinary people instead of dictating policy to them.

Brilliant letter jenny, so I am not the only one it seems that thinks this government is bad for your health. (so to speak )

Sorry - made a mistake - should have read, 'The only thing that could make anything 'exciting' ....' Yes, this government is bad for our health - they are stressing everyone out unnecessarily. Stress probably leads to more illness and disease than the so-called effects of passive smoking/SHS. More people will be taking anti-depressants and tablets as well as buying heavily-priced 'quit' products (nicotine patches etc.) - the pharmaceutical companies must be making a fortune, in which, I have a strong belief, a lot of today's MPs will have shares! There is a vested interest in all this. It has to be money - that and taking the public's eye off the ball. By that I mean that whilst ordinary folk are squabbling about smoking, major political issues go unnoticed. Need I say more!! :)
