Happy New Year? Fat chance

Happy New Year - and welcome back. I'm not one for New Year resolutions but this time last year I decided I ought to lose some weight (without going on an actual diet). On 1 January 2008 I weighed in at exactly 14st 4lbs. This morning I weighed myself again. Result? 14st 4lbs. Go figure.

At least you never put weight on!

Why bother, Simon? 14 stone is a perfectly good weight. So is 12 stone. And 16 stone too.

You are allowing yourself to be suckered into accepting the 'denormalisation' of people-who-weigh-a-bit-more-than-other-people.

There isn't a 'right' sort of weight. It's a fiction. If you accept it, then you'll find that there's also a 'right' sort of skin colour, and a 'right' sort of religion, and a 'right' sort of everything else as well.

Be glad of what you are. Don't try to 'improve' it. We're all different, and that's the beauty of life. These people are trying to make us all the same.

I hope that you have a happy and contented New Year, Simon, It's good to see that you have your weight under control and haven't put on weight, as the Government are now starting on the obese.

And if our beloved guvvermunt-of-the-talents' "anti-obesity drive" fails to "improve the nation's health", then they'll force manufacturers to alter recipes in order to ruin the products and take business away from the evil salt and sugar industries.

"Because we can".
